Self-awareness is a super power that we don’t often utilize. How many sticky situations could you have avoided with a little more thinking, time, and self-awareness? That’s why we have to work to CATCH ourselves.
Anyone Have Any White-Out?
From stone tablets to typewriters, people have often struggled with undoing their mistakes. There’s no doubt in my mind that even though the backspace key was invented that it can’t fix EVERY mistake. No one, and I mean NO ONE wants to submit themselves to that gut wrenching feeling you can’t escape when you’re stuck in the consequences of your actions.
Let me ask a silly question: Have YOU ever had a moment where you’ve had regret for your actions? If you’re a human being then I’m assuming your answer will be yes! Every person at some point has wished they could turn back the hands of time to make a few changes. Unfortunately, time doesn’t work like that and we are to move when it moves. I don’t believe that’s anything to become bitter about, just something to stay mindful about as we choose our actions on a day to day basis.
Roll Call
In order to keep your day from being filled with regrets, we have to become more proactive and employ self-awareness and self-control. More work? Yes. Beneficial to our mind, body, and spirit? Absolutely! Just imagine how hard pressed you would be to find joy on a daily basis by keeping your mind focused on what’s behind you and what you can’t change. Constantly living in the past invites toxicity into your life unnecessarily. I challenge you to CATCH your thoughts and your actions ahead of time – become your own filter. As you wake up in the morning and start to move about your day, do a roll call. Just like you check for your keys, phone, and other essentials, check yourself for your self-control and self-awareness. Make sure to keep them on your person throughout the day, consulting them before every move.
Here are a few steps to follow to CATCH yourself:
- Pause before doing or saying something
- Assess your current feelings about the situation
- Analyze possible outcomes (positive and negative) from certain actions or words
- Decide what you will do or say moving forward
- Release any negative feelings/emotions attached to any other action
- Return to the situation with a new state of being
